Doubling Clitics are Pronouns: Reduce and Interpret
Controversy has plagued the question of whether verbal “object markers” (OMs) are object pronouns cliticized to the verb or realizations of object agreement. Beginning with data from Amharic, we develop a reliable and consistent diagnostic for resolving this question. Specifically, we claim that OMs should be analyzed as clitic pronouns if and only if they are unable to double nominals that are...

In two self-paced, sentence-by-sentence reading experiments we examined the difference in the processing of Spanish discourses with repeated names, overt pronouns, and null pronouns in emphatic and non-emphatic contexts. In Experiment 1, repeated names and overt pronouns caused a processing delay when they referred to salient antecedents in non-emphatic contexts. In Experiment 2, both processin...

There are two levels of rhythmic structure which are assumed to play a role in language acquisition: the basic rhythmic level and the first phrasal level. While the former is supposed to guide infants in language discrimination (Mehler and Nespor 2004), the latter signals the order of words within phrases. In particular, in Nespor et al. (1996), the hypothesis that relative prominence, that is ...
